7.3.4.2 Femoral Neck Sample Preparation

Femora should be cleaned of as much soft tissue as possible, particularly around the femoral head and neck such that visualization of the cartilage and bone at those sites is unobstructed. The distal half of the specimen should be removed using a diamond saw to produce a planar surface. One potting block or clamping device is needed for securing the distal cut end of the femur such that the femoral shaft is positioned vertically with proximal end up. For species larger than rodent, additional restraint at the greater trochanter may be required to prevent bending in the shaft and ensure fracture in the femoral neck.
